In Need of a Child Development Program?
We provide service-enriched housing to an average 102 women daily who are working toward safety, stability and self-sufficiency. Our Case Managers work to establish strong, positive relationships with each woman. Based on these relationships, women participate in a wide variety of services and supports to stabilize and acquire the skills for safer, more self-sufficient lives. Offering high-quality therapeutic child and family development services to families with children ages six weeks to five years. Our housing programs assess the capacities and needs of each woman and child, so we can deliver services that meet them where they are and build on their strengths. Our goal is to create a structured and predictable environment where women and their families receive highly responsive and care attention from staff. Who Qualifies for Free Counseling?
Our services are offered free of charge, ensuring that anyone who needs help can access support, regardless of their financial situation. House of Ruth’s professional counselors are extensively trained in trauma-related therapy and are committed to providing compassionate, nonjudgmental care. Our aim is to help participants determine their options and achieve safe, stable lives free from violence and other forms of abuse, in a confidential and supportive environment. House of Ruth provides housing and supportive services to women at residential programs located in Washington, D.C. All were unhoused and nearly all are survivors of domestic violence.
Mental Health
The building that housed Three Sisters is re-purposed to provide long-term, supportive housing to single women. Since 1970, SOME has been a care provider and a beacon of hope to DC residents, including individuals, families, senior citizens, veterans and those affected by physical or mental health challenges. We meet their immediate and long-term needs through our comprehensive approach to health and wellness, known as Whole Person Care. By nurturing the complete human experience, we help our clients create happier and healthier futures for themselves and their families.
We ask residents for a commitment to stay six months and the maximum stay is two years. Residents must maintain a source of income and pay subsidized rent monthly. Finally, all residents who are experiencing mental health problems or have abused drugs or alcohol must seek and stay in treatment. House of Ruth Maryland’s Chatline is a confidential lifeline to victims in need. The Chatline is an alternative way to seek support for those experiencing IPV who may not have access or the ability to call the 24/7 Crisis Hotline. Through the Chatline, Advocates can help with the same services as the Crisis Hotline, except Rapid Rehousing and Emergency Shelter.
Transitional Housing
The childcare center offers invaluable services to women in the shelter community who need time to concentrate on their own process of healing and renewal. The program provides a safe, accessible, educationally rich environment where mothers can comfortably leave their children. It offers the stability, safety and predictability so greatly needed by children who have been exposed to trauma.

The Bridges Program extends House of Ruth’s supportive services to families exiting our service-enriched housing programs. House of Ruth provides supportive housing services with appropriate adaptations based on guidance from D.C.’s Department of Health and Human Services in response to COVID-19. Kidspace is physically closed while teachers provide online support and activities to parents and re-opens by July 2020. We deepen our financial and material assistance to program participants, particularly to those who lost their jobs as a result of the pandemic. House of Ruth launches a new program, Stepping Forward, which provides scattered-site permanent supportive housing to adult survivors of domestic violence.

House of Ruth, founded in 1976 and opened on November 21, 1977,[1] is a non-profit organization that serves more than 600 women and children who are abused and homeless in Washington, DC.
While I was checking in, I didn’t have a job, I didn’t know where I was supposed to start, and I was pretty much all over the place. House of Ruth Maryland was founded in May of 1977 by a coalition of women’s organizations, religious groups, service providers, and elected officials to provide a safe haven for victims of domestic violence and their children. In November of 1977 we opened Baltimore’s first crisis shelter for these victims in a row house on North Calvert Street. The shelter was staffed by one paid staffed person and a voluntary Board of Directors. The shelter has twenty-three bright spacious, private bedrooms with baths and a large dining room and kitchen.
